Sleepless children

Two nights had passed since she left Krokar for the northern wilderness surrounding it. Her paws drummed against hard, frozen earth as she pushed through branches, drawing her hair distractedly up into a ponytail of wiry waves that tickled the back of her neck and raking burrs from her coat. Her stomach growled, too, but she ignored this; it made her senses keener, she thought, to be a little on edge and a little hungry.

Her nose and shoulder were scabbed from the bobcat, and itched fiercely, but Willow ignored these things, too. She didn't really know what she was ignoring her body's complaints in favor of, though; it was quiet out here, though when she spotted a deer she'd tracked it just to see where it might have gone, and lost it in the dawn fog.

At the edge of a great wood, Willow paused. She knew the land well enough to recognize this territory as being near Sapient, where her stepfather had gone to fight (something that still boggled her mind, though she'd been avoiding all her family besides Storm lately). She frowned, wanting almost to find one of the Sapiens and confront them for their role in this mess, but the thought was silly. She felt absurdly shy.

Instead, she climbed up into an old tree, sitting in the nook of a branch and leaning against the trunk, peeling bark from the sticks she broke off. Below, she heard animals wander, and a cardinal landed on the edge of the branch before startling when it saw her. She felt sort of content.

Dawn was in its infancy when Lucian awoke, emerging from the surface of such beautiful dreams that it had taken him several moments to realize they were just that. He sighed and swung his legs over the side of his bed, blinking into what little dusty light filtered through their dirty windows. Lucian yawned. There was no point in trying to go back to sleep, though he would have liked a little more time with his dreams. Scratching at his disheveled pompadour, the Amaranthe rose and began the process of getting ready for the day.

By the time he was done primping and pruning his appearance into perfection, the world was significantly brighter though the sun had not yet risen above the horizon. Giving his pompadour a final touch up, Lucian slipped out of the room that he shared with Dareios and strode down the hallway, descended the stairs, and stepped out of the Governer's Estate and into the late season morning. His breath made ghosts in the air and the fog cast once-familiar structures in eerie grey. Yawning again, the young man stuffed his hands in his pockets and meandered through the territory.

Lucian had no goal in mind as he walked but he kept his eyes peeled, his ears open, and his nose keen as he moved through Sapient and towards the edge of the territory. Some of his best discoveries and favorite memories had been resulted from aimless meandering. Granted, there were plenty of times when nothing had happened at all but he never regretted this. Even if nothing happened, Lucian never returned to Sapient empty-handed. Even if all he brought home was some wood, he made his wanderings worthwhile.

Stepping past the invisible threshold and into neutral territory, Lucian eventually caught the familiar scent of Krokar. Being allied neighbors, it wasn't unusual to find Krokar's scent around, but this was fresh and, what was perhaps even more interesting, it was female. Her scent lead him to a tree and, glancing up, he caught sight of a speckled and wavy-haired girl among the branches. He gave her his best smile. "Learning to fly, hermosa?" he asked her, exaggerating a Spanish accent that he typically lacked. Lucian tucked a hand on his hip.

She was a girl naive to many of the world's dangers, but Willow was nothing if not alert to her surroundings. As such, she heard the approach of the man (a boy, if she was still considered just a girl) and watched him as he came to stand beneath her branch, grinning a handsome grin up at her and greeting her with a rolling purr that evoked memories of Semini and Laevisa.

She watched him a few moments more, studying the earthen tones of his coat, his ridiculously tall hair, the flame blush of his cheeks, his refined manner of dress and carriage. He looked, for lack of a better descriptor, wealthy, just like she expected from a Sapien. She found herself wondering if he'd fought in the battles.

Yeah, Willow retorted, grinning and nodding. Come up here 'n' I'll teach ya the secret. We do it like birds, just gotta shove you out o' the nest. She punctuated this with a laugh and leaned forward, bracing palms on the branch as she dipped her head to look at him. He was fun to look at.

'less Sapiens 're afraid t' climb trees, she added. Reckon I don't wanna muss up your hair, but it oughta be a good cushion for yer noggin iff'n ya fall.

OOC: Haha, Willow! <3

Craning his neck, Lucian looked up at the speckled Krokaran comfortable in her place among birds and branches and the sky. She was an unusual specimen, he decided, and thought that if Sloan hadn't ruined her pretty face and damaged her eyes she would probably be climbing trees like this one, too. She had an adventurous spirit that drew Lucian towards her. In a way, he felt the same draw towards the tree girl.

Whether because of this or because he rarely liked to burn his bridges with the ladies, Lucian responded favorably towards her retort. As the sharp sound of his laughter erupted from his throat, the Sapien's lips cracked broadly apart. Though he didn't often care to be the butt of jokes (who did?), there were a select few who could get away with it. Attractive women were one of those special few and while the Krokaran wasn't particularly hot, there was a cuteness about her that Lucian liked.

"Oh, you don't know the resiliency of my hair," he replied, stepping closer to the trunk of the tree. The bark was rough against his delicate hands and made the touch of his mane through his fingers somehow softer. Lucian flashed the Krokaran a decidedly sheepish grin. "But, could we start with how to climb trees?" he asked, eager enough to be nearer to her that admitting his inability to climb trees seemed a worthy risk to take. Lucian drooped his ears and allowed his face to fall into embarrassment. The lie was easy as it fell from his lips. "My mother wouldn't let me climb them when I was younger so I never learned."

The Spanish wolf laughed, and Willow smiled at him with sharp white teeth, letting her speckled leg dangle from the branch and swing restlessly as she studied him. She was glad that he did not pout and preen at her quip; that would have been no fun, both because Willow disliked arrogance and because she didn't want to hurt even fragile feelings. She wasn't as mean as all that.

Y' can't climb trees? asked Willow in disbelief when the young man adorned a sheepish expression. She huffed and swung her leg again, looking quite disappointed, then peered down. All right. It's easy if y' find the right tree, 'n' this is a good 'un. It was a healthy old thing, without many dead branches or patches of decay; she needed to make sure it could bear a tall girl's weight, as she was far from dainty. Certainly it could bear his weight, too.

See that branch there? she said, pointing to it. Y' might be able t' jump 'n' get it. Do a runnin' jump if y' need to. Then hoist yourself up!
