329 Set sometime between the corral and the round-up? :3

See galleries for credit.

There were horses to tend, but the rain made the work sloppy and more difficult than it needed to be, by far. The corral, as it was, was all muck -- and a great swath of muck leading up to it. They hadn't even captured any horses as of yet. Only the corral had been built. It stood -- square-shaped and flimsy, not meant to last long -- on the outskirts of Inferni. It was a good deal, as Myrika predicted -- she did not want to venture any closer to Salsola than they wanted her poking around their borders. It worked for both of them.

With the coming of spring, there were more rainy days than not. On some, they were lucky enough to have a consistent break. Yesterday, the clouds had even dispersed for a few hours in the afternoon, leaving them free to work. Even without live horses, even with their capture planned for some days in advance -- the tawny-hued woman and her clan-mates had plenty of preparation to do. There were supplies to gather, stalls to prepare, foodstores to replenish. It was too early to harvest any of the bluejoint or switchgrass, but that was no matter -- there were clover sprouts aplenty throughout the Waste, enough to feed their current horses and more.

The tawny-hued woman contented herself with seeing to their gear. She had dragged a great heap of it out into the hallway of the mansion from the storeroom above the garage, and was picking her way through it. She sorted it as she went, chucking broken pieces aside so she could closer inspect them later. Some might be salvageable. Others, she knew immediately, were beyond repair. She heaved a cracked saddle into the repair pile with some effort, sending a thud echoing through the mansion -- most of it, probably. These old walls are thin, she thought, even as she followed the hefty thud with the rattle of a singular metal stirrup.

The D’Neville mansion was usually quiet most days; though, there were a few instances where there were some ripples in the calamities. Her little ordinance with Cotl’s room and Drystan’s door was one of them, and of course, the loud noise she had heard while preparing the room for Viktor. At this age, he was old enough to be left alone. She trusted that he wouldn’t get into anything crazy, and she promised to leave the door cracked if he needed it. He just loved to play all day – gnaw on his favorite toy and lay around. There wasn’t much else to do – there were barely any other puppies his age and Lorelei barely spent time with him either. While she was already used to her father’s tics and how much of a nuisance he sounded like, Viktor’s were nothing new to her. Either his face twitched or he yelped, but soon she believed he would get into cursing.

”Ich am just go’ink to be downstairs – zee door is open in case du nee’t anys’ink, ok?” Lorelei stood in the doorway, looking back at the lanky boy sprawled out on the floor. ”Ok,” he spoke back in an accented voice, not really understanding all of her English. An ear perked to the other sounds coming from downstairs. ”Kann ich mitkommen?” Lorelei had just been heading out the door, and she turned back sharply, ”Nein. Kommen nurwenn Sie etwas brauchen.” Then Lorelei turned from him, leaving the door cracked, and headed downstairs toward the noise.

Much to her surprise, it was Myrika and piles of things around her. Lorelei slowly came down the steps and into the hallway, keeping her eyes on her. ”Aquila Myrika; du look nice today," she spoke, even as the woman's hair was fluffed with the air's moisture and seemingly pushed to the side for purpose. "Vhat are du do’ink?” It was obvious she was sorting through some things – but what for?

Sorry lady – I don’t have any non-graphical tables at this time :o [300+]

The Aquila expected to rouse someone at some point with all of her noise. It pleased her to find it was Lorelei. The slim coyote had just attained the Triumvirate rank alongside Wraith. In her time as Aquila, there had been precious few within these ranks. Lorelei had proven herself capable, however, and Myrika did not doubt her abilities. It had nevertheless occurred to her that she was not comfortable or knowledgeable about the woman on a personal level. It was on her long, long list of things to do -- as a leader and as a canine both, it happened.

The turquoise hybrid peered up at Lorelei with a grin. The woman's English was musical, tinged with her accent. Sometimes it was difficult to understand, but Myri was quite used to it -- she'd heard some variety of this same accent in some form or other since joining Inferni. It was no longer an anomaly to her -- but she still enjoyed its sound, all the same. Sorting through some shit, the hybrid said, lifting up a pair of reins that had gone rotten over the winter. Useless, she said, tossing it into the pile she'd later turn to scrap or just plain garbage.

The tall woman stood up and brushed her hands off against her thighs. Could use a break, though. Where are you headed? the hybrid asked, setting one hand on her hip.

Instead of keeping her eyes on Myrika, she eyed the piles to the side of the woman. There was one with a mixed jumble of supplies from the stable, one with decent supplies, and one with broken reigns and chewed through ropes – like a mouse had come along and got hungry. The coydog’s bi-colored gaze lifted from the piles to the Aquila’s face once more, as she was answered. ”Novhere. Ich vas comink to see vhat du vere do’ink. Do dich nee’t some help, maybe?”

It was meek of her to ask, even as Myrika mentioned she wanted a break. ”Vhat are du go’ink to do vis all zee useless schtuff?” she asked, using the same word that Myrika had used. What she really wondered was if Myrika would take the time to repurpose it or just burn it. Lorelei honestly didn’t know what she would do in that situation. It would probably depend on the quality of the left over, broken materials and how bad they were frayed or damaged.

Though the idea of a break appealed, the idea of help appealed even more. The tawny-hued woman grinned at Lorelei and nodded vigorously. Sure could, she said. If you help, you can grab a couple things for yourself. If you see anything you like, that is, and if it isn't already junk. The hybrid bent to pick up a frayed length of rope, too short to be of any use to anyone, and held it up to illustrate just what she meant.

I'm going to get rid of some of it, she said, pointing to the junk pile with the rope. I don't think any of that can be fixed. I guess we can chuck it in a room somewhere, or the basement -- maybe somebody can find a use for it before it rots away or the rats get at it. The hybrid turned her finger to the second pile. I'm gonna fix that stuff. Slowly. I'll probably have some of it more than a year, with all the free time I've got, but it'll all get done. Eventually. She grinned at Lorelei again, her red-splashed muzzle twisting into a grin.

OOC - [000] Everytime I see the title I think of ‘blame it on the a-a-a-a-alcohol’ xD Btw, that avatar on the table is gorgeous :o is that a new one? (Hover for translation also)

Myrika agreed vigorously, and Lorelei knelt on the opposite side of the piles of junk. Myrika picked up a frayed piece of rope, and Lorelei nodded, understanding what was meant there. The rope was quickly thrown in the trash pile, and Lorelei eyed each pile before taking anything from anywhere. Lorelei smirked back – it was the best she could do in the form of a smile, not being born with very ‘happy’ genes. Her eyes followed the rope to its pile, and she took a decent-looking halter from the pile. She turned it in her hands and analyzed every detail before deciding that it could be of use and didn’t need to be repaired at all, it seemed. ”Vhere voul’t zhis go? It looks like it is in goo’t condition,” she asked, holding up the halter with her arm before Myrika.

When she was answered, she chucked it in the appropriate pile and went back to take something else from one of the piles. ”How are du und Fesper?” It was very known within Inferni that Myrika apparently liked women, and her and Vesper were known mates. There was no secret as far as that went, and it also made Lorelei feel like less of an outsider. Though, it was a shame that there weren’t that many lesbians within Inferni that she knew of. Dalilah was one of the ones she knew about, but the girl made herself so scarce, Lorelei never knew where to find her.

The coyote peered at the halter and grinned. You know, that's the first good thing yet. Start a new pile, would you? The hybrid smiled and nodded with a red-splashed muzzle to an area that was as yet unclaimed by her overflowing piles of junk. Some of the stuff was, in all likelihood, just used for back-ups. Others were perhaps bits and baubles others "contributed" once worn out. She supposed it did not matter, for some things others left abandoned could be repurposed.

Good, the hybrid said, smiling. It's tough with both of us leaders... I'm just glad nobody really cares. I guess both of us being leaders helps, but even outside of Inferni, the woman ventured. She had not encountered much -- if any -- sentiment that what she and Vesper did was wrong. It was not especially common anywhere she knew of, but it was not unheard of, either. Some thought only unions that produced offspring were viable, others simply didn't like the idea. Still others had more esoteric reasons yet.

The tawny-hued woman pulled a length of rope from amongst the pile. A second rope, darker and more frayed, tangled with it. The hybrid set to work untangling it, working the knots out with yanks and tugs. Anybody in your life? the hybrid asked, wondering. She knew Lorelei had a son, but she also knew the woman hadn't really seemed to be with anyone at that time, either.

OOC - [300+] ooo you should use it - its pretty!

Looking around to the spot Myrika pointed, Lorelei tossed the halter in that direction. It landed with a muffled thump on the old floor, in a decent spot a little farther from them than where the other piles had formed. Lorelei considered its position for a moment, before sitting back on her legs and picking up a new item from the pile closest to her. It was a lead – a piece of frayed rope that looked useless. Without mentioning it further, she chucked it into the useless pile. ”Ich voul’t s’ink it voul’t be easier zhat both of du are on zee same level, so to say,” Lorelei said, picking something else up from the pile and looking it over in her coal-colored hands. At first, she didn’t quite understand what Myrika was saying, but then after a minute, she caught the tone in the woman’s voice and realized that it was because they were lesbian that she was unsure. There were plenty in Inferni that were bi-sexual or gay… so Lorelei didn’t understand what the Aquila was so unsure about.

”Ich haf nefer come across anyone outsite zhat vere preju’tice against lesbians ei’ser… Du haf na’sink to vorry about,” Lorelei assured her. She had always found either men looking to get some or women looking to get some – but then again, she didn’t openly tell everyone she was a lesbian either. Lorelei’s ears perked when Myrika asked if there was anyone in her life. ”No… Just a few crushes, but na'sink serious,” she admitted with a few Infernian faces coming to mind, as well as some others. Maybe if Myrika would have asked who in specific, she would have told – but Lorelei was never one to just volunteer personal information like that, even with trusted peers. She required some innocent coaxing in order to spill the details.

-- thank you ;__; <3

The tawny-hued woman nodded absently. She didn't consider what it would have been like if one of them was a leader and the other wasn't. It had always been so -- before Myrika had been an Aquila, it had only been a crush, something neither of them could admit to. Or maybe it had just been Myrika, and Vesper had sensed that? The tawny-hued woman did not like to dwell on it, especially having come so close to losing the tawny woman once already. It only mattered that Vesper was hers and Vesper still wanted her, too.

Would be kind of a stupid thing to do in Inferni, anyway. The tawny-hued woman grinned. She might not eject someone from Inferni with a poor attitude toward non-heterosexuals, but she certainly wouldn't be sticking them in the Triumvirate anytime soon, either. Hope you find somebody who works for you. The hybrid smiled, her lips twisting a little.

Sometimes I think Inferni's not really meant for mateships. Me and Vesper been the only ones since Dieter and Diana left, a while back. And they came here mates already, I think, so I don't know if they even count. Eh, whatever makes everybody happy. The tawny hybrid finally disentangled her ropes. The one rope she was actually able to set in the good pile -- the other was too old to mend. She took up a halter that looked suspiciously new and held it up, tugging this way and that before putting it into the good pile.

OOC - [300+] ooc text here.

The item that she had picked up next had been a longer piece of frayed rope. ”Haha, ja. Zhey voul’t not dare,” Lorelei smirked, looking up at Myrika before turning her gaze back down towards the item in her hands. It was the end of the longer piece that had been the more damaged part, so the woman took the knife from the sheath of her pants and wrapped the piece tight against the knife. Mich too… Ich learn’t zhat it is better not to rush it. Someone vill kommen al’onk efentually und zhey vill be perfect for mich,” she sighed, holding the rope tight and rubbing the blade repeatedly along the edge of the rope. Eventually it came free, and she threw the bad part in the trash pile and the good part in the salvageable pile. ”Doesn’t mean Ich can’t mess around until zhen,” she smiled, meeting eyes with the Aquila briefly.

”Do dich miss beink sinkle at all?” she asked as she grabbed a half of a halter from one of the questionable piles and held it up to her face with a confused expression. She carefully considered the next thing that Myrika had said – about Inferni never being a place for relationships – yet, everyone seemed to reproduce all the same. She supposed that her father, Cotl, never really had a real relationship here either. He spoke about a woman named Talitha – but given that he called her a whore more than he mentioned that he really liked her, she couldn’t imagine that it was much of a relationship either. ”Maybe du are right,” was all that Lorelei had to say about that.

Now that she mentioned it, Lorelei admitted to herself that she wasn’t entirely looking for the same thing that Myrika and Vesper had. Lorelei was born of a different way of living – one where the women were used and not really counted as equal. He mother was a strung out whore, but that didn’t make Lorelei love her any less. Giza was her slave, and every woman she met on the way was subjected to her every whim. That was very different from what they were talking now, but she didn’t say anything.
