rumble and sway

along Infernis borders; Daeva

:D

It was strange how a name that so defined him could be discarded as if without a second though. Esmeralda had taken his name and changed it into something wonderful, and despite his wandering nature the Wanderer found that his feet always brought him back to where he was supposed to be. Leaving the island had taken some planning, but with the leaders blessing he had departed on a short journey to the outpost to procure some items for trade.

It had been before the Arcturus’ children had been born that he had set foot outside of the pack lands – and so as he went he noticed the way things had changed; a landmark shifting ever so slightly beneath the heavy summer sun. The merchant in him took note of the new pathways that had been blazed through the forest, and he urged Wylder into a steady canter. The dapple-grey stallion was different in the open spaces beyond the island – and Cahan gave him his head, allowing the horse to pick their direction.

It took them south, towards a pack he knew only be name; Inferni.

He had met one of its members many months before, and as he passed the borders he felt his hackles rise sharply -- his lips pulling back to reveal slick teeth. The border was scented thickly with musk and coyote piss, and he growled softly before pressing his knees to his horse only to have them disappear into the thick forest of the Dampwoods.

Some time later he emerged on all fours, his thickly muscled secui form serving him well as he scouted along the border -- his pale eyes lit fiercely. Coyotes had a tendency of setting him on edge, though he had never been able to say why. The thick fur about his neck ruffled in a breeze, and with a wolfish chuff he trotted off through the dampwoods, his muzzle dropping to inhale at the cool earth beneath his feet.

It felt good to wander again.

The wild huntress was out patrolling again, as she was oft to do as of late. War was on the horizon, skirmishes were breaking out everywhere, and her actions in the southern lands had not helped at all to mitigate the danger that loomed all throughout the eastern realms. To say that everyone was on edge was like saying the sun was shining on a clear day, they just were, and there was no telling when the random fighting would turn into all-out war. If she wasn't out hunting to keep the pack fed through these troubled times she was armed to the teeth and standing watch from the archery towers or pacing along the borders keeping a careful eye on their perimeter. There was no telling who could be lurking just beyond the rows of wolf skulls and stink, and if someone was going to sneak by and try something it would not be while she was watching.

Stepping past the line of skulls that marked the border of Inferni's domain the desert flame expanded her patrol to a few meters outside of the clan's claim, hoping to sniff out any lingering scents to make sure there was no one trying to make camp nearby. The Dampwoods was a dense forest with plenty of places to hide and she didn't like the fact that she couldn't see too far into it, even with her sharp archer's eyes. Those eyes, which narrowed suspiciously the moment she caught the faintest hint of a scent, quickly darted to pinpoint the source of movement nearby as she slowly made her way toward where the scent was growing. There was something familiar about it, it smelled of horse and the sea, something she had breathed in only one other time before, which seemed like a lifetime ago already.

Pulling her bow from her back and setting an arrow upon it, she warily stalked forward until the shape of a four legged creature came into view, its form sharpening into a canine before details finally appeared. Grinning mischievously once recognition struck her mind she drew her arrow back and sent it flying, the point cutting through the air, whizzing uncomfortably close to the male's face, before embedding itself in the earth nearby. "Step no further wolf. State your purpose." She demanded very authoritatively, though her wicked smile belied her seriousness as she plucked another arrow from her hip quiver and rested it against her bow.

Oooo, I sense DRAMA

Grass crackled beneath the weight of his stride as he made his way along the Inferni borders. The large skulls sat on pikes and Cahan felt himself bristle beneath the gaze of their empty eye-sockets. He was wolf, and knew what it meant to run wild and stand as strong as any mountain. Infernis display threatened him, though he was not able to put a finger on the reason why. His dark mane shifted in the breeze, and he lifted his head at the scent that wafted towards him – his lips pulling back to reveal smooth slick teeth.

Her.

He remembered her through a haze of alcohol and grief – she had pressed against him, warm and pliant as she had stolen from him. The tiny silver flask had been missing ever since their encounter, along with other select items from his saddlebags – but he had never made to pursue her. Daeva had made a fool of him, and for that he felt a bitter taste rise in his throat. For a long moment they did nothing but stare after one another, his pale gaze taking in the smooth raven of her hair – the rich gold at her throat and chest. The heat of her gaze rested fiercely on him through the sharp grasses of Infernis border, and he growled softly at her in acknowledgement. His pale eyes were glacially cool, and he remained unmoving – steady as any mountain could be.

Neither made a sound, though the whistle on the air echoed sharply in his ears.

The arrow surprised him.

With a sound like rumbling thunder he sprang out of the way, his eyes following the path of the arrow as it met the dry earth at his feet. ”Hold.” He commanded, his tail giving a sharp thrash behind him, ”I am no threat to you, coyote.” Cahan watched the woman nock her next arrow, the bow resting against the smooth curve of her hip.

She couldn't help the amused snort as it shot from her nostrils, the wicked little smirk on her sharp coyjack maw broadening into a mischievous smile. Though she did not return the arrow to her quiver, she did not draw the string to fire either, preferring to keep her weapon at the ready in case the wanderer wasn't alone, in case wherever he had come from had a bone to pick with Inferni too. Tensions were high, her trip to the south gave her more than enough proof of that, nevermind the injured Infernians returning from their scouting missions and hunting trips beyond the safety of the clan's well marked borders.

Straightening up a little out of her fighting stance the huntress let those molten gold depths evidently wander, taking note of his large robust secui frame before her gaze settled upon his face. The night she stole from him was an enjoyable one and she had hoped to come across him again, preferably when he was in the right mind, not plagued by the stormy tides of heartache hazed over by the fog of booze. She didn't get his name, they were both far too distracted to exchange such formalities, even if they had gotten pretty well acquainted by the way she had sashayed her way against him, pressing into him against that tree, whispering sweet nothings as she artfully pilfered whatever she could find.

"What're you doing here?" She queried with a little less hostility and a little more sincerity, her fiery gaze shifting to meet cool blue. With the way things were at present, it was hard for someone to get so close to the border without going unnoticed, but she supposed their vigilance was also their distraction, and the others were so focused looking one way they lost sight of the other directions. Luckily the false goddess had yet to develop such tunnel vision. "You shouldn't be here."

No worries! :D :D I love Daeva!!!

Despite his wandering nature, in truth Cahan knew nothing of the packs that surrounded Midnight Shores. He had no interest in becoming a diplomat, and the soldier in him compelled him to stay close to their Island lest he was required to ward off danger. Though the summer months had been quiet, there was always the silent thread of doubt that wrapped about him like a noose – when that threat eventually did come, the Maethor would be there to meet it.

The woman made no move to fire again, and so Cahan smoothed the fur at his nape, the brightness of his pale eyes alighting on her face. She glittered like a flame, or the smooth rise of a desert dune – and despite this he felt his lips curl beneath the sheen of her mischievous smile. He stepped around the fired arrow, ”No reason,” He clicked the teeth in his large secui muzzle, ”Just out to see what I can see.”

Inferni was a place of rumors and intrigue – and though Midnight Shores had yet to forge their own story with the packs of the north and south, he had heard tell of the times before in Cercatorie d’Arte where the coyote clan had not been their greatest ally… nor their greatest foe. They remained largely neutral, and Cahan felt himself grow curious as the woman spoke again.

He flicked his tail, his eyes narrowing. ”Why not?”

Molten depths followed as the ashen wolf loped around her arrow, still embedded in the earth where she had fired it. She did not trust him in the slightest, but she gave him the benefit of the doubt, still fondly holding their last meeting at the back of her mind. His answer to her question sidestepped the issue – in the eyes of the huntress there was always a reason for going somewhere and doing something, nothing was ever truly serendipitous or happenstance.

"Not much to see here unless you like staring at skulls." She retorted absently, her gaze averting for a moment to eye the pike mounted skull closest to her. It was larger than average and beautifully though eerily decorated with intricate carvings rubbed with dark black ash making the whole thing look as if it were tattooed. She wanted to touch it, but she wasn't ready to let go of her bow just yet, and instead brought her gaze back to the interloper as he posed his own question.

Her fiery eyes narrowed a little in suspicion though her mischievous little smile never waned as she moved her shoulders in something akin to a dismissive shrug. If he didn't already know what was happening then he wasn't privy to such information in the first place. "Because this is coyote territory and you are not coyote." Her tone was very matter-of-fact though her expression belied her seriousness, even if her reasoning was sound. Nevermind that he was outside of the clan's claim. "Where'd you come from anyways?"

I tried writing this last night and the words just wouldn't come out! But... success!!!

He bristled beneath his thick coat, his large head giving a small shake as she spoke. The skulls were intimidating, though he couldn't help but wonder if some of them had been scavenged instead of won as prizes during times of war. He shifted his weight, only to flick a tattered ear at her in response. "I have been many places." He shrugged his broad shoulders and took another slow step towards her, "North."

She was coiled as tightly as the string on her bow, and he allowed himself to stretch, his thick tail flagging for a moment before falling neutral once more. "Why so defensive coyote?" He ran his tongue across his teeth, "I have no qualm with you or your clan."

He rumbled softly, the pale light of his eyes glancing at her bow. "You a scout?" His mouth pulled into a sly grin, "--Or a thief?"

The wanderer inched closer and she allowed it for the time being, those eyes of fire always watching, her hands at the ready and waiting for any sudden movement to suggest he was about to step out of line. As much as she enjoyed their last meeting, she wasn't about to let this male to compromise the security of Inferni's border and jeopardize her place as one of its wardens, not when things were so volatile outside of the clan's claim. There were too many factors to consider to let her truly feel comfortable about the relative stranger, and try as she did to ease off, she just couldn't help but remain wary and ever so slightly unhinged.

His answers to her questions were doing nothing to quell the paranoia welling in her mind and a jet of hot air shot from her snout in a snort at his mention of being defensive, a small laugh trickling forth thereafter at the sheer absurdity of his statement. If he only knew. "You don't. But not everyone is as friendly as you." She finally replied, her impish little smile lingering in spite of her marginal disdain. As his words flowed into more questions they seemed to flutter in one ear and out the other, that is, until he mentioned the word thief, at which point those molten depths moved to settle upon cold blue and her little smile broadened into something beguilingly wicked.

So he did remember her, and it seemed he was just playing it off to pluck at her nerves, which appeared to be strung tighter than her bowstring. She loosened a little but her hands did not stray from her weapon, not yet, her lean archer's body unwinding as another soft little chuckle escaped her like the coo of a dove. "A scout, last time I checked." She jested, oversize ears twitching as they received a distant sound from the forest, which lead to a momentary pause – no more than a second – before she brought her attention squarely back to the wanderer. "But I suppose once a thief, always a thief."

Sorry for the wait!!

Cahan grunted a short laugh, the pale color of his eyes shifting as she spoke. "Ah, so you do think I'm friendly." He couldn't help the deep chuckle that rumbled from his throat as he paced in front of her.

Had he known of Infernis trouble -- that they had been pegged as kidnappers and liars by a court that lay even further to the south -- perhaps be would have acted differently. Instead, the dark man clicked his teeth at her and left a wary eye on the skulls that peered at him from over her fiery shoulders.

As she began to relax the tension slowly eased between them, and he could feel the set of his shoulders loosen beneath the molten gaze of her eyes. The weapon no longer seemed so threatening. His tattered ear flicked towards her, "You would know, wouldn't you?" He took a step towards her, his grin lifting to mimic her own, "I've never stolen anything in my life."

The lie felt heavy on his tongue, but appropriate. For a moment he thought of Wylder, of the woman who had his heart and the man he had stolen her from. His eyes darkened, though in the next moment matched the mirth that lined his mouth.

He threw back his head, "So what's your name thief?"
