Something else had come back to him a few nights ago, as he lay in his little hovel groaning at the stitch in his side and the bruises littering his body; painkillers. He remembered them from the elusive before, and had after some thought gone in search of them, for once moving slowly, with one arm wrapped around his ribs and each step he took sending an aching jolt up his legs.
He searched the buildings he passed, but none of them seemed to have any, and it wasn't until he approached the large fortress with the metal birds he found boxes he vaguely recognized. He opened several, pulling out the metallic packages without bothering to read the instructions, and took handfuls of the colorful pills, until the pain faded and he lay slumped against the side of the building, his eyes unfocused and his head foggy.
He'd sat only because the world had begun swaying dangerously while he was on his feet. Now it seemed a bad move, however; he was about ready to go to sleep, and he was out in the open, vulnerable. As the thought struck him he struggled to straighten a little, bracing himself against the wall and pulling his lips away from his teeth for a moment. He must not have looked very scary, as some sort of bird hopping around by his feet lifted it's head and cawed at him, sounding extremely unimpressed.
He worked his jaw, trying to figure out what exactly that was supposed to mean, and attempted to focus his eyes as the feathered beast began to move, soon hopping up onto his stretched legs and cawing again. Oran felt the sharp talons break through his jeans and scratch at his skin, but no pain came to him; it was a far away sensation, muffled by cotton in his head and ice in his veins.
The bird hopped up his leg, its wings half-spread, and began pecking at his jacket. He watched it, blinking slowly every now and then, and wondered if it was trying to eat him.
And then he wondered if that, possibly, meant he was dead.
