Chasing Butterflies

OOC here: Yay! 600+

The D’Angelo pup awoke early that morning to an empty den. With the formation of the new pack, Anathema, mother Naniko was a busy wolfess, and it was yet another morning that the white wolf had left her dark, slumbering babe in the safety of one of the many dens inside the pack’s underground lair. From the start, Naniko had been strict with Scorpius, cultivating his growing mind and body but not tolerating any disobedience. They had been on the move for much of young Scorpius’s early life, traveling to the territory that his mother claimed just a few days ago. Much of the journey had been easy for him, being carried by his mother or aunt, but eventually the boy got restless and wanted to be allowed to run and play. Even after the pack was formed, there was only one other cub with which to spend his time, and the other adults were too busy settling their territory to be concerned with foolish pup games. Perhaps soon as Scorpius aged and would begin to learn the pack’s ways he would be more entertained by the adults, but at the moment, he was quite bored.

His cousin Juju was only good for chewing on, and with their emergence into the caves his fur was beginning to taste a bit bland. Juju did not seem to be nearby this morning anyway. Scorpius sat up, yawned and blinked the sleep from his eyes. His ears cupped but the little satellites did not detect any sounds of the pack reverberating through the cave, so, curious, he began to wander through the hallways... It was not long until he spotted sunlight streaming into the cavern. He stepped up to the threshold of the den and peered outside. One quick scan of the area proffered no other pack members, and upon seeing so much untraveled terrain, Scorpius threw caution to the wind and darted off. Being young and naive, he was not aware of it when he left the borders of Anathema. . .

Hours had passed while the Luperci cub wandered from appealing spot to interesting smell, and he had just about dehydrated himself with all the irresistible urges he had to pause and pee on so many things along the way. Since he had never left his mother’s protective watch, the fact that he could not magically find his way home had not yet dawned on him, and he certainly had failed to pay attention to the path he rambled.

But the inevitable happened; his round belly let out a furious roar. He had gone such a long way and on an empty stomach, and now all of his reserves were depleted. It was then that he wandered in a circle for a moment before realizing he did not know his way home. His blood ran cold and his heart became a thick lump in his stomach. Unsure what to do, he yipped a few cries for his mother, then crashed through the underbrush towards the sound of water... and came to a screeching halt.

His crimson eyes widened as he saw another pup – and for once it wasn’t Juju! All fears forgotten, he curiously watched the earthen girl for a moment. She was chasing something… a bug. His brows arched and his tongue lolled as he watched her and hunkered down. If she hadn’t spotted him just yet then maybe he could join in this game, too, and take her by surprise. Yet just as he was about to spring, his eyes flicked from the butterfly to the girl, and he suddenly realized how dangerously close her paws were to the rushing current. Without wasting a beat, Scorpius surged forward and caught the other pup by the tail, yanking with all his might in hopes to pull her away from the river’s edge.
