He hadn’t expected her to stop him on his way out. He glanced over his shoulder in an awkward, half-turn position, when he heard her call out. Why would she want to help him patrol? She wasn’t a Vigiles; as far as Hybrid knew, she was probably just a Tirones. She didn’t have to follow him and pester him. Hadn’t he already done his duty alerting Gabriel of the newcomer? He didn’t understand; was this what families did to one another? Pester and harass them? If this was the case, he certainly didn’t want any part of it. He would really just prefer to be left alone in peace and silence to do his job as Gabriel expected. He had taken up a new post as the Tessarius after he had noticed the growing number of wolves frolicking on the borders, and he had been right to do this. With the end of the Second Dahlian War, the only way for him to (legitimately) get his blood was by stalking the borders. He could only hope to find some dull wolves nearby he could slaughter. But with a daughter following him around, he wouldn’t be able to do his job as he would have liked. She would slow him down. She would just be there ; her very presence infuriated him.
“That’s okay,” he replied quickly. “I work better alone.” He began to trot away, hoping she wouldn’t follow him again. It would not work very well for him if she turned out to be persistent. He just wanted to sulk up and down the borders. Why would he want some female, some daughter following him?
