Kansas wandered into the orchard to check on Lexington. It took him only a few moments to find the stallion, who was busy nibbling on the most tender of the apple tree branches. With nothing more to do, Kansas sat in the snow and watched the horse, but the silent and peaceful moment did not last long. Simultaneously the equine and canine ears lifted to muffled snarls followed by the crack of a breaking tree limb. Not often were there fights in Crimson Dreams that escalated above the squabbles of playing puppies, yet the noises he heard were far more sinister and flooded him with fear. Something was very wrong. Immediately he thought of Savina, and the image of her beautiful face twisted with unbridled rage urged him to get up and move towards the forest.

He broke into a run, his long, slender limbs rapidly carrying him to the trees. He smelled blood, anger and fear. What he saw just past the fringe of the forest turned his limbs to lead and he almost dropped to the snowy earth. Savina was lying in snow that was stained with splatters of blood several feet all around her. Savi, Kansas choked. He was relieved to see his son and daughter huddled close, Amata busy pulling something out of the raven matron's leg. The pale wolf rushed toward Savina with a whine in his throat, nuzzling her ear, rasping his tongue against her forehead. He had never seen her so broken before, both of mind and of body. It was the most painful sight.

Kansas automatically began to look his mate over, sniffing her fur, searching for wounds. She was covered in them, but her leg, side and shoulder were most seriously injured, and Amata had already taken care of that. What...? the Sadira breathed to his children, extremely puzzled. As he lay down beside his mate, snuggling close to her, Gotham answered his question. Nuki. Kansas stared off into the distance, gritting his teeth. He had always been uneasy about that woman, there was something wrong within the bloody eyes that he had detected the first time he looked into them. She must have done something unspeakably terrible to provoke Savina into a rage — that was the only reason that the obsidian fey would ever hurt anyone.

The Sadira hungered for an explanation, but his son's angered words distracted him. Kansas's baby blues were serious and slightly stern as he looked at the boy. You should stay here, Gotham. I want to kill her too, but even... even being wounded, she could still be dangerous. Though Gotham was an adult now, Kansas hoped the boy would listen to him. He did not want his son hurt as well, and after what Savina had likely done to Nuki, it did not seem too far fetched that the bitch would want blood as revenge. And... we need to get your mom safe. Though he wanted to know how this had so suddenly transpired, Kansas's priority was to ensure that his mate was secure and comfortable — his confusion could be alleviated later. Kansas turned away from Gotham to look at Amata. The girl would know the right thing to. Sh-should we get her inside? Or...? he asked, desperate to help Savina feel a little better.
