The woman was so soft spoken, so kind that Pripyat almost felt bad for pulling away from her. And yet, he needed his space, needed to stew in his misery. Needed to because he simply did not feel like doing anything else. As she answered his question the response barely registered in his mind. Collecting herbs and what was he doing? He knew she had asked a question and that it was his turn to respond, but it took him a long while to process what was being asked and form a response. "Nothing." His answer came out deflated and defeated, but it was honest. All he was doing was laying here, doing absolutely nothing.
Her voice came again, telling him it was nice to meet him. Was it? How could it possibly be? The large silver boy had not said a single kind word to her, merely accepting her intruding presence and responding when absolutely necessary. Suddenly another wave of guilt washed over him. His mother would be disappointed, even in her current state, at how rude he had been to this woman. Pripyat could not imagine his mother treating anyone the way he currently was treating Mizu. His father perhaps, but his father was a hardened, broken man and Pripyat was not this, not yet. Swallowing hard and forcing a bit of emotion and interest into his voice, he locked eyes with her, trying to spark life into his own. “What kind of herbs are you looking for? What do you need ‘em for?” And then the life left him again, the small spark of interest, but it had been there temporarily, in the very least.
