The night had been cold. Much colder than any of those nights in the mansion in Venice, sheltered by silken blankets and a silken nightgown. Colder than the nights spent in the dilapidated cabin on the fifty-year-old ship she and her now-dead family had used to sail to this unknown world. Even colder than those days spent on the trail from New Brunswick to Nova Scotia. She wasn't used to this. Sure, Italy could be cold, but she was always well sheltered and waking up with a stiff back and a stiff neck was something new to her.
It was long past dawn. The girl, in optime form, stretched, thinking she was back home, then realized what had happened. This wasn't Italy. It was a hostile, dangerous place, where one could sleep outside and almost freeze to death, then wake up and be almost burned to death. That was what was happening now. The sun was shining with an intensity she had never felt before, and she longed to see civilization again. She stood up, running her fingers through her long coppery hair, and began her search.
What she found was not necessarily what she expected. She smelled canines, but mixed in was the smell of deer and of many other wild animals, which would make bountiful prey. A rabbit darted by, and her paw shot to the longbow and sheath of arrows forming a cross around her back. As quick as lightning she strung her bow, aiming directly at the rabbit. But before she could shoot, she saw something else out of the corner of her eye. A lone canine, only a few meters away from her. She did not lower her bow, even though it was directly against her lessons in etiquette.
