even angels learn how to fly

Gabriel did not regret what he had told her, just as he did not regret what he had told his mother. He was a man that live with very little room for such a thing. Yet he recognized there had been a fault made, perhaps out of his own ignorance for the ways of women. They were such flighty, temperamental things. Even now, he knew that Alaine would no doubt ream him out for having left the Mansion, but she was less threatening than Enkiel, who was cold in his treatment and rarely amused by Gabriel’s complaints. At least Alaine had some sympathy for him. He hoped that her scent would go unnoticed on his pelt, and was glad for the distance his daughter kept.

Even now, he worried what she might do. “Likely, yes,” he replied, knocking over a book to see what was below it. Many of these were unfamiliar things, having been brought for his son but abandoned since then. Gabriel had not read in months. Turning to face his daughter, the Aquila eyed her quietly and studied the thing in her hands. She was such a peculiar girl; he wondered if she would have turned out differently if her mother had been around but dismissed this thought quickly. Faolin was dead to him, and she was a no-good traitor to begin with. Talitha had done better without her. “You can always talk to me,” Gabriel finally said, his voice lacking its gruff bite if only for the moment. He was her father, after all, and he still loved her dearly.
