Most of the time, his sleep was plagued with nightmares that he never remembered but that left him nauseous when he awoke. The restlessness had ebbed away in the past few weeks, and he had begun to sleep whenever the opportunity was available to him, catching up on missed hours. His mind was exhausted, and he had desperately missed sleeping soundly.
The pale young wolf was close to waking when the soft call roused him from pleasant dreams. His jaws stretched into a wide yawn and his pale arms arched into a stretch behind his head before he got up and blundered toward the door, still a little dreamy. The dove gray face that appeared when he pulled the door open caused a smile to break across his lips. Hey, sweetheart, he said warmly, stooping slightly to embrace her. He gave her a gentle squeeze before releasing her again, though he did not wish to let the child go. Nearly losing her had made her even more precious to him, something that he did not think was possible. He had never felt more relieved than when Artemis opened her eyes and became alive and conscious again.
Kansas was ecstatic that the young woman had come to see him, though it surprised him a little. You feeling okay? ...Need something? he asked out of instinct, calmly searching her pale eyes for any sign that something was wrong. She definitely looked much better than when she had first awakened, the her fur brighter and her eyes more vibrant. But healing would take time, and he imagined that she still was not feeling her best.
