She'd scared the pale boy, and he'd nearly fallen into the open trench. Her mouth fell open and immediately, she was on alert, too. She didn't know this wolf-looking boy living in the midst of so many coyotes, and her ears shot back. Had he misunderstood her? Her brows furrowed and her head tilted as she tried to understand. "Why.." she whispered to herself, before he added more of his thought. Sage certainly hadn't meant to harm anything, and as she realized that that's what he meant, she sprung into apologetic action. "No, no... that's not what I meant, love--" she urged, moving forward as she shook her head and hands.
Sage moved to the edge of the pool, though still a fair distance from him, and peered over the edge herself. Sure enough, she noticed movement on the littered floor of the empty pool. "The humans used to fill these things with water and use them to swim around in, for fun. But it certainly is someone's home now," she said, pointing at a fattened toad hopping about the detritus-covered ground. The tan Lykoi smiled before taking a final drag from her joint and tossing it to the ground, stamping the remaining ember out with her padded foot.
As she blew out the smoke, the boy asked about the smell. Sage got that all the time. "That's the smell of marijuana being burned," she explained. Really, each strain had a different scent; but each was clearly discernible as pot. "I finished a cigarette of it just now." She tried to guess how old he was, knowing that he must have been at least six months to be on two legs. Deciding that she shouldn't share her stash with him just yet, she tried to change the subject.
"I'm Sage, by the way," she introduced in friendly tones as the calm fully returned to her. He was just a boy, after all. What harm would he do?
