The sound of frightened birds shook Tawny awake. Blinking a few times, she rolled onto her back and looked up; the sky was starting to lighten up a tiny bit, though it was still very dark. Sitting up slowly, she glanced around and listened carefully, trying to figure out what had freaked the birds out. There! The sound of heavy breathing and what sounded like soft cursing…the voice was familiar. A pack mate in trouble? The brown girl stood and left her bags and packs all piled together as she crept through the foliage in the direction of the noises, trying to be as quiet as possible.
Right when she saw the female, she knew who it was. Wretch, Saul’s relative and a relatively young female. She looked thoroughly distressed about something and had blood on her body in some places. Tawny’s mind flashed back to when she’d been hurt by the men and she nearly panicked. Rushing forward, she stayed just out of reach and whimpered, ears pinned down and tail tucked tightly between her legs. Her hands stretched out palms up to show that she was weaponless and harmless. W…Wr-etch? What ha-happened? Her eyes scanned the girl’s body quickly, trying to find wounds.
Tawny could not let this girl go home to Saul injured. She owed it to that man, who had been so good to her on multiple occasions, to take care of Wretch to the best of her ability. Are you…hungry? Food always helped stave off shock and get the mind and body running in better order. If Wretch got something to eat in her belly, perhaps she’d be able to tell Tawny what had happened and why there was someone else’s blood staining her usually white coat. C-come on, I have enough f-food for us both.
