The tantalizing scent of elk drove Kiara on, her hunger growing as she imagined the feast. The arctic wolf felt was unfortunate that they were hunting in the summer time. Summer was a lean time, where wolves were forced to hunt rodents instead of the hoofed creatures. All the beasts were healthy and fat. They had entered their time of plenty. To make things worse, Kiara's white coat stuck out like a sore thumb. This hunt would push both wolves to their limits and test their skills.

A call rang out through the valley and Kiara's ear's pricked as she slowed back to her easy lope. Picking up on Tharin's excitement and feeling her own, the arctic female happily joined in with her voice. The howls of hunter's spooked the elk as they ran faster and tried to get away from the pursuing wolves. For a moment, the main body thinned as they shied away from Kiara and Tharin. However, the elk regroup as the call died and formed an even tighter group as they ran.

Sapphire eyes continued to scan the herd, looking for breaks and weak individuals. The elk mother's were smart, keeping their calves well inside the herd and away from the wolves who could make an easy meal of them. As Kiara ran, she let her mouth hang open and her pants were audible. She wasn't tired, just hot.

The scent of wolf's blood caught Kiara's attention and she slowed to allow the herd to go past her. Once the way was cleared, the young mother surged forward, darting toward Tharin and his struggling prey. A howl rang out again and Kiara called back to Tharin as she rushed to join him in the fight. Kiara joined the silver male, helping to black the injured elk from returning to its herd. Black lips peeled back and a sharp growl came from the tiny female. The elk snorted and lowered its head to put a set of antlers between it and the wolves. The antlers waved a little back and forth and Kiara made a fake lunge towards the creature.

Neither wolf nor elk touched, but the movement was enough to make the hoofed creature back up a step. Excited, Kiara ran to the side a bit and expertly positioned herself so that the elk didn't have enough room for it to make a break while giving Kiara plenty of room to safely lunge at the elk. Slowly, the two wolves worked to drive the healthy elk into the freezing river.
