Lannen couldn't help the half smile that spread his face when the earth toned girl regarded him with such suspicion. This child really was something else - being out in the cold dawn in the first place. And now she faced him without the blink of an eye. The white man really admired that. She seemed so sure of herself, with her back to the sun, facing the shadow that he cast.
He was intrigued. At a young age, he'd been headstrong and pugnacious too. That had followed him into adulthood. He did have an authority issue, and it was a damn big one. But looking down at the resolute little girl, he found he could tow the line for her. At least for the entertainment value.
"I've been lost for a while," he said. He wondered what she'd do next.
