The longer their encounter went on the better the Marino pup began to feel. Maybe meeting new people wasn't so bad after all. Maybe that boy had just been a bad, mean boy and not everyone was like that. Suddenly she felt the urge to ask Noir if she was pretty, but she didn't. While she imagined the older girl would say yes (she was being so nice already!), she suppressed that urge. Even the smallest possibility of hearing "no" again made her too afraid to ask. That "no" had hurt so much. Hurt her where she hadn't known she could be hurt. Momma had said that he was wrong, that she was pretty. She believed her momma. Momma was much smarter than the mean boy. He was just stupid and mean and bad and not nice.
As Noir exuberantly echoed her name the girl could feel her face get warmer and her smile grow. If she hadn't been covered in her dark chocolate fur, the reddening of her cheeks would have been noticeable. She could see it sometimes when her daddy blushed with his light creamy fur. It always made her giggle. She loved her father. He was so gentle and nice and everything good. Being caught up in her own thoughts, as she tended to do, she didn't noticed the long pause in their conversation. It was only when the lighter girl ducked back into the hole that she was brought back to what was going on. Her little head cocked to the side as she heard funny noises coming from the hole. Was something else down there aside from this Toefur? If so Cambria wanted to see it!
But when Noir came back out there was nothing in her mouth! Where was the Toefur! The pup looked to either side but still didn't see anything. She cocked her head to the other side and gave the older puppy a questioning look. Where was her toy? Though then she caught some more movement coming out of the den. A tiny little duckling! Cambria had never seen a real one before! Her oceanic orbs grew bigger and her mouth opened in a large happy smile. "Oh woooowwsss!" It was amazing Noir had a duckling! "He's soooo cuuuuuttee! Hewwos duky!" This trip was better than she had ever expected it to be!
