Her pale form remained quiescent upon the forest floor, and, despite the small amount of lighting that the moon and stars lent them, he didn’t notice her eyes snap open, nor as they watched his vague form approach. At this moment he felt more like he was in a dream than anything—perhaps he had fallen asleep back at his den in the junkyard, and this was simply a very realistic trance. As this thought began to sink further and further into his mind, he began to feel more and more invincible, and less afraid. Why should he be afraid anyway? This creature wasn’t even able to keep herself up, if she was alive at all. It suddenly became a feat to come as close as he could to the crumpled figure. Be this dream or no, it seemed to be a strike against his fortitude to run away now.

Snake didn’t hear her whispering—and even if the words did murmur past his ears, he either convinced himself that they were merely in his head, a part of this figment, or nothing at all. He edged closer still, not knowing what he would do next. So here was the girl still (for he was certain she was a girl), and he was wondering if her sides were really rising and falling with breath, or if it was just a play of the light and shadow. He took one more half-step closer, and he was now only a few feet away.
