How quickly the tranquility of a quiet day could be shattered. One moment, Ehno was setting aside some space at his worktable, and the next two frantic calls seized his attention, immediately setting him on edge, his muscles tense. Muffled as Mati’s calls were through the walls of the mansion, he could not miss the sheer terror and urgency carried in those cries. Before he could even give it a thought, he bolted from his workshop, nearly knocking over a pile of boards sitting near the door. He bounded through the halls of the manor and burst through the front doors and into the grey-skied day, worry-induced adrenaline fueling his every move.

It was crystal clear what the emergency was as soon as Old Red came into sight. The old building’s roof had collapsed, and the dust conjured up by the falling beams and rushing winds only made it appear more hollow and ominous. The wind still whistled through the air, pushing against the collapsing barn and causing it to creak in distress. The whole building seemed unsteady, as if a few vital pieces of its structure had been taken down during the brief cave in, making it all the more dangerous.

His hurried pace brought him swiftly to the barn, arriving in time to see Mati safe outside and Ghita hurrying into the unsteady building. Warning bells immediately went of in his mind as he came to realize that the Church girl’s call for help wasn’t for herself, but for another. Ehno tried to slow his frantic thoughts long enough to take in the scene, and when he finally recognized the scent of his niece so strong around the collapsing barn, his heart nearly froze in fear. He could hear his sibling calling out to Cambria from within the barn, a confirmation of the fear he’d just realized. His gaze turned to the earthen hued Mati for a moment before he nodded abruptly and tried to steel his nerves. “We’ll get her out of there.” A reassurance for her, as much as for himself.

He hesitated no longer, hurrying through the unsteady barn’s wide doors after his sister. "Ghita, be careful!" he called after her, though it was already becoming hard to catch sight of her through the dust and shadows within the swaying structure. Ehno had always placed himself in the position of protector for his family, ever since he was a boy. It unsettled him that another of his family should endanger themselves by entering the barn now, but he knew it was likely they would need each other’s help to get Cambria to safety. Amber eyes peered around the building as he ventured further in at a more subdued pace. He wanted to run to her aid as quickly as he could, but without knowing where she was or how damaged the interior of the barn had become, it would be dangerous for him to rush through there. “Cambria?” he called, an echo of his sister’s, voice just as strained with anxiety. The Marino pushed through steadily, hopeful thoughts and adrenaline propelling him forward.
