things we lost in the fire

I'm sure you guys are sick of these by now, but yaaaay the war is done. :] After a round of boring meeting stuff we'll have a hunt and then feast because Inferni is awesome and to get everyone's last war-killing urges out.

There had been a muted disbelief when the boy, scarcely older then his own son, had come to Inferni’s borders and formally ended the war. Haku had been dethroned by his own pack, as Anselm had predicted. That disbelief had turned into a much stronger fury, for Gabriel had wanted to rip the beast’s head from his shoulders and destroy everything in his way. Still, he had realized what this meant. The war was over, and Haku no longer had the protection he had clung to. His rage had faded into a predator’s cold calculation, and when the boy had left, Gabriel had gone and gathered his council.

He had explained this to his mother and cousin, and they had been thrilled that the war ended. Anselm more then the other two; almost immediately after this he had told the pair he needed to step down as a leader. Reasons explained, Gabriel had accepted the news without any grief. The trio had gathered outside of the caves, and Gabriel had called the clan. Slowly, a much smaller group arrived. They had lost many, and this stung a part of Gabriel that would not show. Still, he understood the nature of war. Sacrifices had to be made.

“As of today,” he began. “The war is over. Dahlia de Mai has overthrown Haku for us. There is to be no further conflict between us. However,” the Aquila’s face turned dark, and a low rumble echoed his words. “Haku Soul is still alive. He is no longer protected by his pack, but you are not to underestimate him. If he comes here, we will take him as a group.” Three times now, Gabriel had failed. Kaena had failed twice. If these two could not destroy the monster, no one could alone. The shadow fell from his face, and a glance was spared to the golden hybrid at his side. “Anselm has stepped down as our Optio, and resumed his position as Caelum.” Satisfied that everything had been covered, he looked to the clan without the weight that had been weighing him down for what felt like eternity. Gabriel’s ears turned forward, and his face silently asked if anything more needed to be said.
