Big Grin (519)

The war was over.

It was over, and he still swaggered across the earth, still alive and breathing .

The hybrid woman was not at ease with this cessation of hostility. The danger had not yet passed if Haku was still alive—just because all of Dahlia would not be gunning for their blood did not mean that they were safe. It just meant that the chocolate-furred man's forces had decreased a little bit, but there was nothing to stop him from recruiting others to the cause—nothing at all. The silver-furred canine knew just how persuasive he could be, remembering the glittering sky-colored eyes peering at her from shadow from the first time they'd met. They seemed almost kindly then, though it sent creepy chills up and down Kaena's spine to think of Haku in such a way.

Anselm's withdrawl from the Legatus ranks had come as a surprise to Kaena—she had never considered the pressures of war and leadership might come creeping up on him faster than they would her. Even so, the hybrid woman would not hold it against him—he was not leaving, and he would remain within Inferni. He just needed time to himself, was all—and Kaena could certainly understand time needed to recover. Inferni had survived before him, though, and it would survive still with her and Gabriel at the helm alone. They still had Anselm's eyes and ears to rely on, too—he remained in the ranks, taking up his old position.

As Gabriel's call went up and the coyotes began to gather, the silver furred woman withdrew into thought, contemplating this end to the war. She had not imagined it would end this way—she saw Dahlia falling, Haku's body strung across the trees, his chocolate-colored hide hanging as a terrible reminder to the rest of the world what happened when they messed with Inferni. This was not the end Kaena had wanted. Her sable-furred ears were pricked forward as Gabriel addressed the coyotes, her single yellow-golden eye focused over on Halo. She would be dead now if it was not for the girl—and though there was some resentment in Kaena for being denied her vengeance, certainly, she was not blind to the fact that she had been saved.

Usually the coyote woman had nothing to say at meetings such as this—she had never been particularly good at addressing others as a group, and it made her almost nervous to do so. “The war is over, but the danger is not past us yet,” she stated simply. “Not as long as Haku lives,” the silver-colored canine added. None of Inferni could become complacent now; they had to remain vigilant and protective of their own, now more than ever—maybe pack life was the last tether to his sanity, and maybe now he would not care at all what happened to him. This was certainly a possibility; the scarred canine knew very well what a general disconnection could do to the mind. She had spent many months alone throughout her life, and it was never easy on the sanity.
