things we lost in the fire

Hybrid was silent, but the rage still coursed through his veins. It was a fire that threatened to consume him, like the many fires had consumed the land before him. He would not be quelled by Gabriel's attempts of peace. He had tried before, and it had made no difference. A second war had followed, and there was no way to certainly prevent a third (or cause a third). Perhaps, if Hybrid was fortunate, Haku would rally new troops and attack again. Or, perhaps, Haku could try to attack and be sorely defeated. Hybrid did not know if he wanted Haku to live, but as long as he was alive, things were interesting. Life was interesting, and the fire coursed on.

Gabriel's comment about Anselm fell on unconcerned ears. Anselm's departure from the leader ranks made no difference to Hybrid. While Hybrid fancied himself to be Gabriel's right-hand man, he knew he lacked the authority to truly act on his own, in Gabriel's word. He had no ambitions for leadership, and position of Optio was better suited to the shadowy de le Poer. All that mattered was bloodshed. Kaena spoke soon enough, his voice full of concern and worry. They were only foolish fears. As long as Haku was alive, Hybrid could continue his war against the wolves. He would continue it even when the ex-Dahlian died — for it was inevitable — but while he was alive, Hybrid could grin through the blood. Like the other three, he would miss this war.
