things we lost in the fire

While the war with Dahlia de Mai was over, Corona knew that the true war was far from over. At that point in time, she knew that there would be another. It was foolish to think otherwise; she had been raised partially with the knowledge that it would always be there. Peace was a pipe dream. If war did not exist between two creatures, then it existed within the self, and it was with the latter in which she was most familiar with. She lingered on the fringes of the congregation, sticking to staying out of sight and mind for the better part. It wasn’t so much that she had no care for what her brother said, it was really quite the opposite. But she felt that it was more show than anything, more to warn them that they weren’t out of the woods.

Which was just as much of a sentiment echoed by her mother than anything else. When Kaena spoke up, her attention diverted cleanly to her, still finding the crisp tone hard on her ears. For the longest time she had been certain that her mother was gone, either dead or never to return, yet she was very much alive and there in the flesh. Very much still the woman that she knew her to be, a mother first and foremost, and yet a protector and a fierce one at that. Age may have tinged her now, just as it had begun for some of her oldest children, but they were by no means to be put down yet. In that regard, they were very much like Haku. But there was the confidence and arrogance to back their name and their clan, and she knew that in time they would either run him out or crucify him with gas cans and matches.

Regardless of blood, fire ran like gasoline in their veins.
