The silver-shaded coyote could not possibly have known of Andrezej's daughters and Niobe's son; this information had never been given to her, and thus, this was her first great-grandchild. Even if she later learned of Artie, the scarred woman would always remember this moment foremost. She had laid eyes on Halo's son first of all, and so he was locked into her mind as such. There was just one puppy here rather than an entire healthy litter, but perhaps that unlocked some of the mystery as to why the cinnamon-shaded wolf had shown no signs of pregnancy. The scarred woman put her hands beneath the puppy and lifted him up, staring into his face, taking in his every detail. The scarred woman squirmed and writhed with excitement; she could hardly contain it. She drew the small, crying thing close to her body and held him against her chest, rocking him back and forth. Her single eye lifted to her granddaughter, a ridiculously frightening and strange grin upon her face. “Halo,” the silver-shaded coyote said softly, pulling one hand away from the small puppy, still gripping him firmly with the other hand. She motioned to the reddish canine to come closer. “He's beautiful,” the silvery woman said, her eyes drawn back to the small puppy. Even three generations separating them, the silver-shaded hybrid saw herself reflected in this tiny little boy, and she swelled with joy and pride at this, clutching for Halo to come closer and share in this joy. She wished for nothing more than for the red-eyed woman to revel in her motherhood.
