In their world, secrets lurked everywhere, hiding so efficiently from comprehension. Rio spent many hours alone trying to understand, arguing with herself until her head ached. She asked herself if she was the ruler of her own world, if she alone decided what path her life would take. The more appealing option was that her path were chosen by something else, something much greater than herself. She couldn't name the answer, struggling constantly to choose. She was locked in indecision.

The Marino child felt these questions inexplicably racing through her mind in the dimness where she stood with her brother. What had drawn her to him now, as he gathered his possessions to leave her behind? In a few hours, she would have missed him. He would have been gone. As he rose to his feet, the girl removed her hand from his shoulder and made a few slow steps backward. His eyes seemed to blaze like terrible green fire, his voice holding a note that frightened her.

At last, the young woman was pushed over the edge by a vicious force. Periwinkle eyes shimmered brilliantly, teardrops leaking down the sides of her gaunt face. He had told her that she knew, and indeed she did. He was leaving, and she knew deep inside that she could not stop him. But she wasn't yet willing to accept this. Harlowe was one of the few that she truly loved, but he was unaware. Perhaps he would change his mind if she could make him understand her love. That must be why she had come upon him, why fate had sent her here. Fueled by this longing idea, Rio moved toward him again and threw her arms around his slender frame, her hands tightly gripping his bony shoulders. Please... Harlowe... Please dont go, she pleaded softly, her tears moistening his beige fur. I love you.
