There was only a desperate and terrible need for her body to stay active, for her body to stay tired and keep her brain from replaying the fight with her sister. It had been stupid, bringing up what she had. It had been a bad time and a bad place. Yet she was unable to control the viper in her mouth or the poison it carried. Aurèle knew that she would always be a danger to those who were too weak to survive around her, and so she had retreated and left her sister alone in her grief. Even her son, who usually spent at least an hour a day with her, had been keeping his distance. Instinctively, Anatole knew that his mother was on edge, and after spending over a year with her, he knew better then to approach.

Crouched low, the arctic wolf moved inch by inch forward. The doe was young—she was stupid. An elder, wiser deer would have fled long before a wolf could get so close. Luckily for Aurèle this was not the case. With her muscles taunt, the she-wolf opened her mouth and exposed her teeth to the pre-dawn light. There. Without a sound a coiled spring in her spine broke free and the green eyed woman rushed forward. The chase did not last long. The doe was small, but it was still a kill. Satisfied, she dragged the carcass back towards the center of the tribe’s camp. Though she herself would have no use for the skin or any other parts of the animal, one of the wolves here might.
