Where had the world gone?

Bright blue eyes looked to the sky. It was nice out he determined, so maybe they were just… out. He was growing up, getting older he figured and thus there was no more need to watch him as constantly as his mother had been. He had wondered out here all his own, following the scents of Cypress and Oak in the hopes of finding them. But when he had turned the corner of the cracked door and reached the porch and peered out into the open world he hadn’t found anyone. Their scent disappeared into the vastness that laid beyond the Dreamer’s door, lost to him and the trail too long and wide for him to think about following it.

Off on some adventure, he figured as he lay at the edge of the step. He looked down, imagining it like a large cliff that he leaned over. He flinched as he though too heavily and sunk deep into the imagination. But after reminding himself it was merely a single step he calmed and thought about the cliff, the picture returning. He could almost feel the wind running along his fur and he was still too frightened at the mere daydream that when he thought about standing to peer over the edge he figured it was simply best to stay on his belly. But it was all just make believe, appearing as quickly as a shake of his round head could make it disappear.

Back on the step, Alder gave a long whine, water-hued gaze looking upwards now at the tree’s tops. There were few birds, unlike in the morning hours. Maybe they napped, maybe they had found another place to live and had left him like his two brother and mother. Alone to fend for himself. Even though he was the biggest didn’t mean that he could be on his own. Ears flattened, one hanging on each side of his head, and he placed his chin on his paws and waited for them to return home.
