She stirred when he touched her. He was slightly afraid that the woman would usher him scoldingly away for interrupting her sadness, but instead she gave gave him the gift of her shattered, beautiful smile. In return, he grinned in an uncertain but sincere way, pleased by her approval. Feeling safe in her presence now, Oak ventured to sit on his haunches, his long tail encircling his paws. His deep, wondering eyes drifted up and down her figure, mystified by the dress of cool scarlet, bright gold and deep black that adorned her. The garments were the most exotic human artifact he had yet seen, and he had trouble looking away from them even when she addressed him in strange, accented tones.
The clothing was marvelous, but Oak was much more interested in the wolfess it sheathed. She had scared him, and he let her know with a nonchalant nod; childish honesty in action. The boy was still smiling, though, evidence that all was completely forgiven, another characteristic of his tender age. She pulled more wonders from a pack he only now noticed, a chain of golden coins jangling prettily as she revealed them. Ears lifting, Oak leaned in to sniff the coins, unable to identify their strange, foreign aroma. He did not know what her offer to "do more" meant, but the nature of it had him nodding exhuberantly. Yes... p'ease! She had said that it was for him, whatever it was. Her kindness suprised him so much that he coudn't refuse despite his confusion. Never before had a stranger shown him generosity, in his quiet, sheltered life.
The boy tore his staring cobalt eyes away from the coins, facing her instead. My name is Oak. Who a'you? he eagerly returned, dying to know her name, to know every little thing about her.
