Marika had never paused to consider just how big the Russo family was. She knew that there were large communities of her relatives in Russia, but until she had been struck by a fancy to meet them again - leading to her abandoning her pack once more and paying dearly for it - she had never really paused to think if they wanted to see her. Her only relationship to them was through her father, whose devotion was something she admired and secretly wished to mimic. However, now that she was back and sick of circling Cour des Miracles, hoping to see her grandfather, afraid of seeing Vigilante and admitting that once again, she had deserted the only family she knew. It all felt so confusing and for once, she resented her mother for leaving. Because now, when she wanted family the most, there was no on to comfort her.

Moving north, she steered clear of Dahlian territory and headed where the smell of coyotes rang strong. She circled their pack lands, admiring the skulls. They didn't frighten her, oddly enough. They were done as a warning, perhaps, but she knew she had nothing to fear. The beatings she had received in recent times, the marks for which she still bore, were nothing like this. This was merely a call to stay away. There had been no warning for her, and she felt the familiar nightmare tug at her consciousness. She fought it, though, focusing instead on the intricate designs of the skulls, the way they screamed in their frozen agony. It was beautiful.

Curious now, Marika sat down and crossed her legs. Her eyes, mismatched but wide in wonder, stared at the skulls, for a moment completely forgetting where she was and just how much pain she was hiding behind her childish curiosity.
