Before turning to feast, the hybrid thought better of it, and decided to catch an extra fish—or perhaps two. She could always light a fire and smoke them, storing them for later. They surely would not keep if she did not preserve them in some manner, and the scent of rotten fish was particularly repulsive. She did not wish for such a scent to get anywhere near her home; once it was in the cave, it would be extremely difficult to get out. Better than trying to keep them, she could give them away—there were plenty of coyotes within the clan who might enjoy a different sort of meal, and exposure to the mostly untapped resources within the waters of the clan's territory.
The sound of an approach went unnoticed as the scarred hybrid continued to fish, her attentions focused on the surface of the water. The movement of fish beneath the water could be difficult to discern depending on the sun's angle, and it was just her luck that such a moment of poor reflection was upon her. Of course, the sounds of a strange voice interrupted her not a moment later, and wide-eyed, the coyote turned to face the speaker, her coal-colored ears raised in curiosity. She could not understand a word of what he said, but he did not seem to notice or care; the young canine rapid-fired questions and words at her in this harsh tongue. It reminded her of Cotl, and she peered at the boy curiously, making the familial connectionjust as an even stranger creature made its way over—some sort of pale deer, and quite young. It was perfectly at ease with Kaena and the stranger.
Bewildered, the Centurion turned her head to look at the other canine, smiling almost meekly. “I don't understand what you're saying.” He gestured and pointed to the ground at the fish, and she looked down and back up at him. “Fish?” she said, uncertain if he was asking what they were, and more uncertain as to whether or not he could understand her.
