When more familiar words came from the boy's mouth, the hybrid woman breathed an imperceptible sigh of relief. World language was one area in which she was severely deficient, being unable to understand anything but the few words her father had given to her. Those words were from a language that might have been dead many thousands of years prior; certainly, no one still spoke it at the time of the human's demise. Kaena did not even know how Andre had come across these words. In any case, they were of no use understanding this canine, and she was quite glad to hear English, however accented, come from his mouth.

“Maybe, but they're not bad to eat,” the coyote said, indifferent to his protests. She was years beyond defending her dietary choices from attack; as coyotes, they should have been well-accustomed to a life of scavenging. “Who are you?” she asked, curious to know just who this canine was. He looked and sounded like Cotl, but he was far too old to have been here in Inferni or even this side of the world. She was confused, certainly, but not so irritated by her confusion as to become short with him, even when he unexpectedly called her ‘sissy.’

“Sissy? I am fishing,” she said, peering at him with a golden-yellow eye for a moment before responding to his question. The boy picked up one of the fish and turned to offer it to the white creature; at this, the scarred hybrid snorted. “I don't think fish are meant for him to eat,” she said. “Grass, maybe.” Were it not for the canine's apparent youth, she might have grown irritated—as it was, she was in a decent enough mood, and she had been generous enough to consider sharing the fish in the first place. She would not make a fuss over one being taken as intended.
