How certainly things had changed. Gabriel listened to his clan and thought of those they had lost, the things they had gained, and saw the faces that were still so young and envied them. He eyed Kesho curiously, and the way his dark niece seemed so disapproving of him, but said nothing. Finally, when all had gone silent and his sister said nothing, Gabriel began to speak.

He spoke of old wars and the old beach, and recounted the way things had changed with Kaena’s disappearance. Gabriel further explained about the fire, and recounted his introduction to Anselm, Inferni’s survival, and the things that had made the clan strong then. Others picked up where he left off, and soon the story of the clan was made clear to all. The coyotes did not linger long together, breaking apart when their business was done. Behind them they left many tracks, echoing the many who had come before, and the man who would come after.
