Though they had been living together the past few months, the silver-shaded coyote knew little about Itachi. There was no coldness in their relationship, however, and it was not due to a stoic demeanor that she did not know him as well as she had hoped. He was a quiet child, soft-spoken and uncannily intelligent, especially for his age. He was happy to please Kaena and leave it there; he did not require cajoling or even the harsh word other puppies sometimes needed. Itachi seemed to know his place, but for all the things the silver-shaded coyote saw glowing brightly within him, it was disturbing to not know him as well as she felt she should have. The hybrid had spent many of the formative weeks in youth with Itachi. Rather than chatter away as soon as he found his voice, Itachi seemed to immediately prefer to contribute to the conversation where appropriate and where he had a particular thought. He wasn't one to interrupt; rather, when adult spoke around him, he listened with rapt attention, absorbing their conversation long before Kaena thought he could have comprehended it. Surprising the old woman, who had raised more children than she could count at this point, Itachi seemed to understand everything.
The silvery coyote detached herself from the boy, gracefully withdrawing from his puppyish embraces. She moved to Halo and settled down next to her, with the smallest of the trio positioning himself between them, his head tilted backwards to peer at the adult faces above him. “I'm feeling better lately,” the coyote said. “Less ache in the morning. Yourself?” the coyote said, unaware that anything could be amiss with the cinnamon-shaded woman.
