The scarred woman did not doubt that Halo loved her son -- part of her, anyway. Some faint part of her even still loved Vitium, even after he had betrayed them and spoke out against their way of life. Part of her still loved Andre, despite what he had done to family itself. There were these conflicts always in her head, family versus clan and blood versus family. Some of them would grow to hurt their own, and there was nothing the old coyote could do about that. She had raised Vitium right -- she could have done better by Andre, of course, but she had done right by her older son, and still he had turned against her and Inferni both.

The silver-shaded hybrid smiled faintly at her granddaughter, her coal-shaded ears pricking forward. “There are a lot of new ones, and some of them are soft. You'll set them straight, mmm?” she said, her yellow-golden eye glittering. Despite all Halo had been through, here she was at the top of the clan -- against adversity and the world bearing down her back, the cinnamon-shaded woman had persevered and proven herself worthy of the title Triari. The newness of the ranks did nothing to lessen their importance, of course -- these were their council, the three most-trusted canines of the clan, and Halo was the first chosen for this. “I'm very proud of you, Halo,” she added, shaking her head in amazement. It seemed effortless, but Kaena knew better.
