Shadows in the Night

For Jazper da boogey-man! Perfect for Halloween, yes?

The world he had been born into had changed so drastically in the past weeks. The cooler days had brought with them all sorts of weird changes. The grass in the morning was coated in a white sheen, and crunched oddly beneath his overly large paws. Feeling stiff against the pads of his feet. No longer damp and clinging as it had been when it had been warmer and coated in dew. But it was not only the grass, but the leaves of the trees had changed as well. Changing from the green color shared by all to a variety of oranges, yellows and reds. Most had even fallen from the limbs they once clung too, leaving the trees bare and naked. It was a source of mystery and amazement to the young pup. As each changing season would be until he became accustom to the cycle. The slate gray skies didn't detour the pup from his explorations, nor the biting wind. His coat was starting to fill out as the chill took grip on the lands, making the cool air most enjoyable.

Like most days, Cypress had set out with little-to-no idea as to what he would do. Putting one paw infront of the other he let the world take it where it willed. Chasing leaves and the invisible prey that hid in the crunching mounds of them. The trees looking so different now that they were bare and it was like exploring his home all over again. Eventually he had wore himself out. Finding a nice pile of leaves, safe and out of the wind he laid down for a nap. The afternoon was young and he had plenty of time to take a short rest before headding back home.

Cypress awoke with a start. What was that? He was on his feet instantly, ears pinned back and his tail tucked as he looked around him, spinning in circles. Something had woke him up and it was late, much later than it should have been. The sun had already vanished from the sky but it was not quite dark...yet. Where am I? He thought to himself, unable to recognize exactly were he was. His heart hammered in his chest as he started to panic, his mind still fogged over from sleep he wasn't able to think clearly yet. There was a rustle in the distance behind him. Spooked, the pup spun to look towards the source of the sound, large ears pressed foward. Though there was nothing. There! He heard another rustle from another direction, but upon looking there was nothing. Ears folded back, flat against his skull. He needed to get home. Dangerous things came out at night. Momma would be awefully worried about him by the time he made his way back home. But which way was it? Quickly, and not with out frequently looking behind him the tree pup made his way home, at least he hoped he was going in the right direction.
