At first, Oak padded away from home with slow, uncertain steps. His heart was urging him to race off into the distance with abandon, but he was still just a child, and fearful of the mysterious threats he might face on his own. The land folded into sparsely forested hills, and soon he was no longer close enough to the Manor for any Dreamer to hear him scream. Still, he somehow kept moving, and as the moments passed he became more interested in his surroundings than the possibility of danger. A thick fog shrouded the hills, blanketing the landscape in eerie gray. He could barely see more than a few yards ahead, where the rest of the world was concealed from him by the cloudy mist.

A light rain fell, moistening his reddish fur, the wet grass soaking his fat paws. He wasn't accustomed to this cold rain, the freezing sensation that dug right through his skin and into his bones. The boy was shivering when he came to the base of a tall hill whose crest he could not see through the fog. His heart began to race as he climbed to steep rise. Anything could be up there. He may as well have been ascending the stairway into another world. All his fear had deserted him, replaced by excitement and a sense of bravery. Soon, Oak could see the end of the slanted, grassy path — the top of the hill, where a lone tree stood in a pool of its own withered leaves. It was an oak tree. He grinned ecstatically, crying out in delight as he plunged into a pile of sodden leaves.
