"Oh! Congratulations," she said, although as soon as she said it, she didn't know why. Maybe because her son had grown up to be the leader of the pack, and she imagined that was no small feat for the boy - to get the leaders to trust you enough, then to prove your loyalty and climb the ladder of the ranks? Skye didn't really get her position the traditional way - she and Shaw had created the pack, and it had sort of worked out like that. She did know that any leaders after her and the red male, however, would have to earn it - like Kaena's son had.

She briefly wondered if Kaena herself has ever climbed the ladder as well, but didn't get to be leader or didn't want to. She knew that if one didn't want to be leader, she or he most certainly didn't have to - they could choose to not be the leader. Skye remembered when she'd lollop around the mountainside, playing around - she never dreamed she'd be part of a pack then, much less one of the leaders. And now she was a leader and glad of it, although she could respect that some others may not have wanted to be.

Then Kaena mentioned a fire. A fire? She hadn't known there was a fire in the Souls area. "I do not," she said uncertainly. "There was a fire? And a place before Nova Scotia?" Skye wasn't aware that the packs had been somewhere else before - she thought they had always been here. She supposed she was wrong...and undoubtedly the fire had occurred before her time at Souls. Otherwise she would have known about it - maybe even the fire occurred before she was born!
