Normally placid Gabriel rarely relaxed enough around others to be emotion. Hybrid was one of the few he felt comfortable around—his singular minded soldier, his war-dog. Gabriel knew that Hybrid would had had killed for him. He knew that the man was mad, in his own way, but Hybrid was still useful. If he was not, Gabriel would have put a stop to his frivolity. For now, though, looking the other way when such things were involved would be simpler. Ignorance sometime served even him.

The coyote’s response was a stupid one, and Gabriel frowned. “Coughing,” he growled, advancing on his smaller companion. Without care for personal space, he began sniffing at Hybrid’s mouth and face, seeing if that dead-flower smell he had caught on the white woman was around him. Enkiel had seemed confident that the disease was not a spreadable one, but Gabriel did not want to risk infection destroying Inferni.
