wake up, open the door, and escape to the sea

In many ways, Hybrid and Gabriel communicated best when they did not speak at all. He stalked after the coyote, his large paws moving in time with the smaller canines step. Despite trailing behind his reddish companion, Gabriel did not find such a thing a sign of status. He would both gain and lose the lead from his companion, stopping to smell at an unfamiliar scent or to remark the borders.

At the mountain Gabriel gave Hybrid some distance, cautious of the loose rocks and wishing to cover more ground. The goats that so often traipsed over the mountain were not out so late, costing the two males some fun. He grunted as a stone fell from under a back foot, slipping slightly as he did so. “I can’t believe those wolves climbed over this,” he commented idly, pleased that he had known of the pass not far from where they were.
