A long time ago Gabriel had realized that Inferni would never be able to exist without wolfish blood to control it. His mother and those before her, those who had lacked this diabolical additive, they had all failed. Their names resonated within his memory and he identified each by their breed—coyote. Coyotes had formed Inferni but they had each left it in ruins. Gabriel had to pick up a clan made up of self-serving idiots and children, and he had to contest with the aftermath of his mother’s war. The Inferni he had formed over the mountain they now climbed on was one formed with a wolf at the helm. He would never admit he was such, but he knew in his heart this was the case.

Yet like his father before him, Gabriel hid this ultimate truth deep inside and chose to never look at it. He lifted his black nose to the wind and was glad not to find ash. It had been too long for the soot of that great fire to linger. Within years it would recover, but he doubted those that could remember the fire would ever seek to cross that mountain again. Gabriel would not. God had set him to burn, and He had done so for a reason. Those lands deserved to be destroyed as Sodom and Gomorrah had burned.

The wickedness had perished there, but traveled within the hearts of those who had crossed the mountains. Hybrid looked down at him from a higher outcropping, and Gabriel wondered how much longer a being like the red-eyed beast could survive. He was no different than Haku or Samael. For an instant, Gabriel debated telling him the truth of the fire. Another boy’s face flashed in his mind and he dismissed the thought. Silently, the burly halfbreed continued along the rocky trail.
