They walked in silence, broken only by the occasional tumbling rock. Gabriel stopped now and again to remark the borders, his scent musky and strong. He often imagine it carried the smell of smoke with it, but this was a fleeting thought and one he dismissed as fanciful. Two fires had come and gone and left Gabriel to focus on the things his mortal form was responsible for. Inferni, his family, everything he had put into life now that a younger war-hungry soldier had aged.

So they walked on, a wolfish shadow and his smaller red companion in tandem in step and silence. By the time they reached the far side of the mountain, where the tree-line blended into the forest surrounding the Mansion, Gabriel had felt an all-too familiar ache in his shoulder. He left Hybrid to inspect the outlying courtyard of the crumbling human-thing, and entered the smaller building to seek out his red-eyed nephew.
