saw death on a sunny snow

Oh no, it was marvelous!

INCHARACTER

Movement in his peripheral, a shift in the wind, and a small mystery was solved. Vheissu had been vaguely aware of another presence in the quiet wood by a prickling on the back of his neck, (paranoia was useful every now and then) but had given little thought to it. He had been far too occupied. But now his attentions were drawn from things unseen and to the dark woman perched upon the rock close to where Vheissu sat. Her scent on the wind told him all he cared to know; she was a wanderer such as he was, though perhaps more familiar with the territory, and belonged to no particular place. The vigilante took another long drag from the short black cigarillo and turned his narrow gaze to the stranger.

"Right," he answered her gruffly, flicking his finished smoke to the frozen earth. No, he was not lost. At least, not in the sense she implied. The ginger man smiled grimly to himself, the expression probably unseen in the dusk. He observed her for less than a minute before turning away to stare through the trees which were steadily becoming covered in shadow. The night would soon be all around him—them actually, for there was indeed a woman in his immediate vicinity as well. Company had become an abstract concept to Vheissu. He sighed.

To stay or continue the hunt? That was Vheissu’s concern. Night was close at hand, which in all likelihood meant that packs wouldn’t want strange travelers knocking on their front doors and sniffing around their borders. He could continue moving, at least, until he was far enough from the next pack’s territory—was it Phoenix Valley?—that he could set up camp without being bothered or accused of trespassing. Yes, that seemed to be the best plan of action. Vheissu stood to go, then paused, offering a glance to the woman. Was she going to follow him, or stay there?
