INCHARACTER

Yes, of course she would follow. Though Vheissu was unsocial and largely taciturn among others, he was certainly not rude. He would tolerate her presence, perhaps even speak to her. He eyed the chocolate woman curiously, briefly admiring her sharp eyes. She wasn’t a child, yet she was still as curious and playful as one. Calm, self-assured, almost cocky. She amused the coydog, though his squinted stare and the slanted turn of his mouth indicated otherwise.

Truth be told, the man had a soft spot when it came to women. Not in the common, ordinary way men did; he had forsaken his natural urges long ago. No, it was more paternal or fraternal the way he felt about women, even the fellow hunters like himself. Perhaps it was because he saw his sisters in each of their faces, lost, lovely, and wild alike. Perhaps it was another reason. Of course Vheissu had spent countless nights lying awake, pondering this exact topic. But now was not the time to revisit this long-weary subject.

Her inquiry brought him from his brief reverie. The ginger canine swiveled an ear toward her, tilted his head, and let a few moments of silence reign, broken only by their footsteps. He didn't want to divulge too much of himself to the stranger, no matter how charming she was. Vheissu pretended to ponder for a moment more before answering.

"There's a pack this way," he grunted, Southern accent revealing itself better than in his previous one-word response. "Phoenix Valley, I think it's called. I'm headin' that way." It crossed his mind that she might be headed that way as well. She couldn't be a member, judging from her sent, but perhaps she knew the place well enough to have friends there. That would be just as well. It was possible that she might even have seen Vheissu's quarry, unlikely as it was.
