Unable to sleep, Kansas had carefully gotten out of bed, grabbed his satchel and silently made his way through the halls of the Manor. He stepped out the front door, closed it gingerly, and bounced down the porch, his pads shocked by the cold of the snow covered grass. A walk would get rid of the pent-up energy that was keeping him awake - difficulty sleeping wasn't an uncommon problem, especially on the days that he spent doing nothing. He hadn't even been able to push himself to hunt, eating the meat kept in stores for the wolves of Crimson Dreams.
Part of him enjoyed his small burden of laziness-induced insomnia. As the ghostly werewolf ambled across the grassy hills, his eyes sought the stars. "Oh my god,' he exclaimed softly, his fingers touching his jaw as they had on other clear nights. The stars were unbelievably crisp and clear, shining with blazing light. Recently, he had begun to read about the universe, and it was the most amazing subject he had ever taken to study. The stars baffled him, because they continued far beyond what his eyes could fathom, both around the world and deeper into the universe.
Kansas climbed the slope of a tall hill, a perfect spot for stargazing. Getting to his knees, he brushed snow away from the grass beneath, clearing himself a seat. He crossed his slender legs, setting his pack in the snow beside him. From the worn black bag he took out a small blue bottle, a pipe, and a lighter. His cold fingers trembled as he took a sticky bud from the bottle, loaded it in his pipe and flicked the lighter into ignition. The earthy taste of the bud immediately soothed him, warming his entire body as he exhaled a giant plume of smoke. The snowy boy was no longer uncertain about smoking. He had not allowed it to become a habit, using it only on occasion. It was natural medicine, perfect for these sleepless nights.
Kansas finished his bowl, stowed the materials in his pack, and returned his gaze to the night sky.
