Hybrid’s call roused Gabriel from the remains of a small meal. He left the scraps for the already circling ravens and moved towards the source quickly. It surprised him when he spotted the pair, whom barely looked related due to the girl’s odd markings. It had been Gabriel who had first realized who the child’s father was, and even now that truth seemed laughable. Hybrid was not the fathering type. Still, she was family—another link to the Massacre bloodline that had all but vanished in these parts.

The coy-wolf came up to Hybrid’s side, but did not look at him nor give any indication he was aware of his presence. This was very much the way the two behaved. Gabriel had made a point to display his dominance over Hybrid since the day he had been forced to beat some sense into his thick head. By repeating himself, the coyote would remember. It was the girl that interested him, with her still too-large ears and petite body. How much she was build like her mother. “Valkyrie,” he greeted her. “What brings you back here?” A subtle charge. Gabriel too, felt the bitterness of abandonment.
