For Ever! 515 words.

The air continually grew colder, and as a result, the King did not venture very far from the home he shared with his mate and their young children. Noah and Liam were both far too young to be journeying too far away from the house in such cold conditions, and Vigilante was not willing to risk their safety and their health. He knew that the borders would still be protected, even if he were remaining close to home for his young children, and even though he knew that Haven would not be venturing too far from his own house except to quickly patrol the borders and to go to the stables as he did often. Haven's mate was due to deliver any day now, the King suspected, so he did not think that Haven would be willing to leave her side much either. He did not blame the Knight.

The sun was shining warmly and its rays reflected brightly off the snow outside. Vigilante sat by the front door of their home, muscular secui form hardly moving. He was watching his sons play a short distance away, romping together in the way that brothers surely did. The dog King would not know that for certain, of course, as he had only had his sister, and on top of that, their upbringing had been far from normal. Of the two, Noah seemed to have the more dominant personality, and Liam was more than thrilled to follow his lead in whatever game they were playing. They were just about a month old now, and the King enjoyed watching their personalities grow over time.

"Boys," Vigilante called, catching them as they began to wander a bit too far away for his liking. The two puppies moved clumsily through the snow to come to sit in front of their father. He studied them for a moment, their bicolor eyes reversed. Liam's left eye was green, his right eye as blue as their mother's. Noah was the opposite, with Ayita's lovely blue adorning his left eye, and the jade of their father's in his right. "I told you not to wander too far," he chided. "We'll go inside if you can't behave. So, are you going to go too far?" The two boys shook their heads quickly, confirming that they would stay close, and the King settled in to watch them play as they ran off together.

It was enjoyable to have puppies in the house again, even if Ayita was very tired with motherhood. There had been a small number of puppies in their home in the past—Amaranth, Kable, Ever, and Kambujiya—but all but Kam had moved out, and even the small orphaned boy had been spending much more time out of the house, and he would be in the adult ranks soon. Vigilante had missed having young ones around the house and having Noah and Liam was a great source of joy for the dog mutt, who had been hoping for many years to one day father his own puppies. He loved them a great deal.
