Fortunately for Slade, the female, who introduced herself as Elaine, seemed to have better conversation ideas as she stepped down from the porch to greet him. He gave a small nod, as the "spook" was of course forgiven; it was his fault in the first place. She said she was a singer, in a rather dull tone which Slade was slightly surprised at; she struck him as a more curious, energetic girl, much like himself; why the sudden monotony?
Elaine had moved closer to him now, and he could see her far clearer to his relief. He had seen her color correctly, as she was shades of brown all over her body with darker patches on her legs, ears, and tail. She was tall, and Slade felt that she would probably tower over him by a few inches if they were closer; even now when she was hardly a yard away he felt self-conscious of his size. She didn't seem quite as fluffy as a wolf and was probably a hybrid; of course, how was Slade supposed to know what a wolf looked like when most of the wolves he had seen were in Optime?
Returning his mind to the conversation, Slade answered, "I'm Slade, a writer; low in rank, of course, because I'm no Luperci...." He was careful to mention that his rank was low; he noted that Elaine had called herself a new singer and didn't want to make her feel any need to be submissive toward him. He was supposed to be the shy, passive canine, and given his past experience with others yielding to him he wasn't sure he was ready for that treatment again. Drawing his attention away from that, he asked, "Why so formal?" He wanted to get to know his packmates in a good way; he knew that he could never get used to being around someone who couldn't speak with expression if their life depended on it.
