Kansas woke from his dreams to a prematurely dim room, and his dark brow furrowed. While it wasn't out of the ordinary for him to sleep unnecessarily long hours, it couldn't possibly be evening yet. His internal clock told him otherwise. Kansas yawned sleepily as he shoved a wad of pillows and blankets aside, untangling himself so that he could walk over to the window. Peering out at the dark, laden clouds, he was struck by a wave of excitement rather than dread. Storms meant warm fires, food, and closeness that came of being confined together.
He was being naive, snowstorms were dangerous. Kansas turned away from the window, sifted around his belongings for his scarf and wrapped it around his neck as he hurried out of the bedroom. The soft sounds of uncomfortable stirring on the first floor confirmed his suspicion that everyone else knew about the storm. He rounded the banister just as Jazper's hulking figure disappeared through the front door. For a few seconds Kansas froze and couldn't move, paralyzed with shame. He dreaded facing the coal-furred man, anticipating the puncturing needles of his yellow eyes.
Kansas rubbed his arm worriedly, completely lost until he saw the swish of black tendrils through the front window. He brushed past Ghita and the pups with a slight wave, then headed out the door. Silvano was there too, and Kansas ruffled the boy's rich curly hair with his knuckles before taking in the goings-on with a sweep of his sky-colored eyes. Savina had already collected the materials they would need to board up the windows, though he wished he had roused sooner to help her. Kansas touched her slender shoulder and gave her neck a small, almost apologetic kiss. You got us a project, he stated obviously. He detested physical labor, but this was a rare and necessary occasion for it, and he was glad to do it. Jazper was already doling out advice that would be very useful to the pack, though Kansas could not seem to look his way.
