Snowstorm Thread - Round up the Pack

OOC: Late, but better late than never.

Ah, snow. It was so light, so fluffy, so calm... or at least, that was how Slade was used to it. His day had been more or less plain an average, walking around alone, hunting, and making up stories. That was how most of his days had been for his entire life, but now he was in a pack and intended to stay in the territory. He knew how disastrous it could be when he ventured outside the borders, and did not want a repeat of the episode with Jaden. His wounds still stung from it all.

Slade shuddered as he trotted along, his gait getting slower. The wind and snow had been rough all day, but now as evening came it was starting to get violent. He shuddered; this was one of those times where he wished he were a Luperci and had a cozy house to stay in. It was a lot better than freezing to death. His fur was long, but it just wasn't made for weather like this. He bent down to chew out ice from between his pads, completely missing the first howl of his leader. Crud, his paws were numb, probably frostbitten. This was a terrible winter.

He knew that he had to get to shelter soon before he froze to death, so Slade tried to make his way to Thornbury. That was where the houses were, and where there were houses there was usually warmth. He remembered his friend Elaine, who he had met a few days ago; maybe she would let him stay with her. Still, none of it really mattered if he couldn't see where he was going.

Stupid snow. Stupid wind. Stupid myopia, Slade thought. He could hardly see what was two yards away in the first place without a flipping white blur in his face. He couldn't even use scent to find his way with the snow quickly stuffing his nose.

What would his brave, heroic, fictional-ideal-of-his-true-father done to survive the cold? That legendary man had never faced a storm in real life, since he wasn't real himself, but he would just use his determination to survive. Slade knew that he needed to do the same if he was going to have any hopes of getting through this.

Fortunately, he wasn't ridiculously far away from the town, and soon he picked up another howl. Determination surged through the young coyote's body, and he forced his legs to run, picking up speed. He managed not to make too many crashes and soon managed to reach Thornbury. He saw Shawchert standing on the porch of a house, giving orders for everyone to go inside, and Slade was all too happy to obey. He admired Shawchert's bravery, out here and facing the elements at their worst, just to make sure that his pack was there. It was just how Slade imagined his father to act.

Slade slipped inside right after a pregnant black female, who he recognized as Valinta. He didn't have time to look around to see if he recognized anyone; warmth flooded him instantly. He slunk into a corner, sat down, and let out a heavy sigh. Already he was starting to feel the floor with his paws, which was a relief. Thank goodness for his pack. He would have never survived the storm if it hadn't been for this. Even though he didn't know most of them, Slade realized that they were a family, whether they liked it or not.
