Perhaps it was something in her friend's voice that served to soothe her fears, or maybe it was having such a dear and trusted friend to look over you through such an important yet frightening ordeal. Nut probably it was just Alaine's stern iron will and the look on the woman's face that seemed to say 'the only thing worth panicking about is what I'll do to you if you panic' that made Orin's nerves rapidly calm. At Alaine's reassurance, Orin relaxed and reclined in the nest she had made, all fright melted from her visage as her expression shifted to a strange yet appropriate mixture of joy and impatience.

It was still so hot in the bookstore, but suddenly the warmth did not bother her anymore; in fact, it felt comforting. She no longer yearned to lay in the snow, and it felt as though it radiated into her muscles and helped her to relax. Somewhere deep in Orin's mind she imagined that warmth spreading out onto the nest she had made; her children would be here soon and she wanted them to have the warmest nest. They would be so fragile, they deserved only the very best. She could barely believe that just a few minutes ago she was about to beg Alaine to let her give birth in the snow. Luckily, this was not Alaine's first rodeo, and was here to see Orin through it. There would be no mistakes on Alaine's watch, Orin knew.

As Alaine opened the door to retrieve her supplies Orin felt the overwhelming urge to tell her to shut it. The cold would get in! The hilarity of this thought made her smile, and she was sure to keep her mouth shut on that one. Instead, she focused on her breathing. This was important, not only because Alaine said so but because the moment she began breathing slowly, steadily, deeply, her body began to feel less alien. With one of the breaths, Orin laid her head back and stared up at the ceiling, finding a moment to daydream.

Twins... She was hoping for twins. Sky had felt her stomach the day they were still snowed in after the storm, the first time Orin ever felt the babies move inside of her, and thought there would be twins. She hoped so, and was quite convinced by their active moments that there had to be at least two babies. What would they be like? What would they look like? She would know, very soon.

Alaine, true to her word, did not take long at all. Orin was still very much mid-daydream when her friend returned and she set aside her fantasies to watch as she laid out her supplies. She idly wondered what each item was in turn, and quickly stamped out the thought when she found herself growing curious how much of it was there for an unwanted situation. She reminded herself not to panic, everyone would be okay...

And then there was a flood of pain. Although it was more intense it was also more exciting than the last, and as though Alaine knew it was time she took up her position and delivered soothing yet direct instructions. With the next deep breath, Orin had just one last moment to ponder what it would be like to be a mother, and then she was.

The boy was born first and proved to be the most difficult for Orin. It was as though the bulky brute shouldered his siblings out of the way in a race to be the first to see the world, but once he was there he was apprehensive. He was finally born after several laborious minutes and there was barely enough time to deem him a healthy, strong puppy before the next insisted on her moment of glory. There was a long respite after the two were born.

Orin lay on her back, panting gently and enjoying the moment of rest. There was a moment when she thought she would never relax again. Her two puppies were cuddled up close to her, and one arm was protectively around the pair. The boy seemed excited over all of this business and would not stop wriggling and grunting, but the girl, though alive, was different. “She's so much less active than him,” Orin worried. “Is she okay?”

Her golden eyes moved from her son and her daughter, and back to Alaine, but before the healer could answer, Orin suddenly felt another contraction. Her eyes widened and she looked at Alaine in shock.

“It's starting again!” She said, excited, and soon one more very small puppy joined the other three. Orin nuzzled her tiny daughter – she was so small next to the others – but even she was more active than the other little girl. “Look at her, she's just the tiniest little thing.” She smiled lovingly. “She will be the one I name Titania, she will be my little fae. Is she well, too?”

Her eyes turned to the others and a hand gently caressed them as she spoke their names. “Alaine, my son will be called Demetrius, and my daughter,” a look of concern washed over her face as she stroked the silent child, “is Juliet.”

Smiling, she tried to turn her upper body to the side so she could lay facing them. “Do you think we're done?” First she asked Alaine, and then she looked at her puppies, “Or are there more of you guys?”
