He could clearly discourage them, but all three sisters alike seemed completely incapable of full disappointment. At his words, each sunk further into their shoulders, into their own little pits of flaky, flower-filled worry and fear, but with China's encouragement rose once again, like nature's phoenixes they surely believed themselves to be, to higher spirits on the chance they remained united. He could have told them they stunk of death and blood now just as badly as the skull-tipped wasteland they called home, but he did not. He could have told them he didn't dare walk within, lest he be captured in torment by whatever disease the Lykoi possessed, whatever it was that had created his murderous father or swayed his malleable sisters... but he did not.

He was a Lykoi. He knew it. He had seen the Chaos star, carved into his father, carved into his sisters and into the land itself. He knew he was a piece of it. He knew he would be leaving more than his family behind.

"Okay, okay, fine, calm down," he said, smiling weakly. They were idiots, yes, but they were his sisters. They were all he had left, and he loved them with every ounce of his being, just as he loved his mother wherever she may be. "But I don't eat leaves and dirt like the Junipers anymore. Please tell me you've gotten more appetite since then." He stepped back, holding out his arm to motion at the land behind him, rather than the land before — a deliberate motion to expose his unwillingness to follow them into the territory.
